I used to be described as fun. As a student, people have it in their heads that you’re a fun loving party animal and for the most part they’re right. Five months on and I start my first real job after uni, a career I want to sink my teeth into. But every time that inevitable question arises, the “so what do you do?” question, I joyfully respond “I’m an accountant” and I watch that smile on peoples faces slowly fade as they try to respond with a positive answer. Little do they know I’m the real winner, I’ve loved working with numbers from the first time I played the banker in monopoly.
So I’ve started my new job at A* Accounting Services, a small accounting firm in Windsor and It’s going great. I like the boss, I like what I’m doing and I especially love the numerous cups of tea I drink throughout the day. There’s only one drawback to the job… I’m out of my depth. I had two weeks before I started to buy some revision guides and cram as much as possible. I went from watching a film a day at uni to processing people’s accounts and if I mess up then some company will suffer because of it. I have the power of controlling clients money…and I have never been so terrified in my life!
Anyway the boss talked me through what I have to do and this week Ive managed to process so much data I feel like I might actually know what I’m doing. Highlight of the week has to be going to the harvester at 4pm on friday for an end of week overview meeting. I guess that’s the plus side of being in a small business. After a week of spreadsheets, importing data, learning about Xero, reconciling bank statements and spending my evenings studying for my accountancy exams after christmas, I think a pint is well deserved.
Hero to Zero? Yeah Right! I’m having the time of my life.
Enjoy the fireworks,
